Hello gophers, glamorous ghouls and gargoyles,
It’s Monday again. That can only mean one thing: 3 for 1 !
This week, Chris Thomson of Terry Malloy’s Pigeon Coop mega-fame has been kind enough to supply us with his choices for 3 for 1. In case you did not visit his blog yet (you must be one strange person!), you should do that immediately as he writes about all sorts of awesome movies.
Let’s get started, shall we?
3 for 1 – Terry Malloy’s Pigeon Coop
The year: 1982
The movies: E.T., The Thing, Star Trek II – The Wrath of Khan
Common denominator: They all have aliens in them.
1. E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial
This is one of the films that kick started my interest in films in general and, along with Star Wars, made sci-fi a little more accessible. Maybe aliens aren’t out there to take over the planet; maybe they’re dead nice and just a little misunderstood! This has everything – it’s funny, touching, and even a little scary in places. A lot of people say they were scared by this as a kid. Me? I absolutely loved it. MUST SEE. (Catalin: You should also try the Turkish version AND the creepy as hell porno they did after this. Say good-bye to childhood!)
2. The Thing
John Carpenter’s classic horror could easily have made the ‘must see’ choice too if it weren’t for Spielberg’s loveable little alien. The Thing still holds up incredibly well – the tension, isolation of the environment, the genuinely creepy monster, it all adds up to one of the most effective horrors of all time. It might look a little dated at times now but don’t let that put you off. (Catalin: It’s obvious which movie I think should be a must-see, right? RIGHT? This one, hello!) WORTH WATCHING.
3. Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
This might come from the fact that I’m much more in the Wars camp than Trek camp where Stars are concerned but this was just pretty damn terrible. Apparently this is one of the better Star Trek films. If that’s true then, good lord, the others must be terrible. It’s boring, cheesy as hell and looks like a child made it. No doubt Trekkies will set their phasers to kill (or something) for me putting this here. DON’T BOTHER.
See you next time! MAYBE! Oh, and thanks a million for doing this, Mr. Pigeon Coop.
